Jackson Wink MMA is world-renowned for training the best fighters in the world. The MMA gym is now turning its attention to youth wrestling in Albuquerque. They have started a new club team in hopes of building a program that produces champions, both on the mats and in life.
“We really want to get involved with the community a little bit more and there is no better way to get involved in the community than really supporting its youth. So, this is a wrestling program, but it’s a little more than that because we are really excited about getting these kids to go to college, their education, just everything that we need to kind of bring it all together,” said Head Coach Greg Jackson.
“The kids are going to be going to tournaments, they are going to be competing locally and competing statewide, and then the goal is to go win the big national tournaments. We want to compete with them, and this is the beginning, and I think we can do it,” said Mike Winkeljohn.
Wrestlers aged 5 and up are welcome to join the team that will compete in and around the state. Wrestlers will be able to train with high level professional athletes such as Gable Steveson, who spoke to the kids.
“You know, wrestling can take you to the highest of the highs and the lowest of the lows. You know, I have seen big matches, I have seen big losses, and I have seen great victories. So, to come out here and show these kids what it means to be someone that can make it to the top and show them that they can do that too, means a lot to me.”
Around 60 wrestlers showed up to the first practice, with one of them being 6-year-old Jayce, who said, “I like it because you just like get to sweat and when you grow up you might be able to get a lot of girls.”
